Join the Bernard Betel Centre Volunteer Team! We have some great new volunteer opportunities to choose from:

Yiddish Instructor for Beginners
October 2019 – Day & Time: Open (Depends on Instructor and Room Availability)
We are looking for a volunteer who will be able to lead a “Yiddish for Beginners” program. The volunteer will develop lesson plans to gradually build students’ understanding of grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary; prepare materials to teach Yiddish to beginners; create an engaging and meaningful learning environment for up to 10 older adults; understand the class’ needs and tailor lessons to suit their learning styles.  This volunteer role falls under the Recreation Department and reports to the Coordinator, Recreation who will provide guidance and support.

Meals on Wheels Drivers
This program provides seniors with a nutritious meal and a security check. Routes are available weekdays and delivery is between 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. Volunteers can choose between a regular weekly route or provide back-up support when one of our regular volunteers is not available. Drivers use their own vehicle to deliver the meals and a small financial reimbursement per route is provided.

“Stories of Us”  Workshop – Russian to English Translators are Needed
Monday, November 25 – Thursday, November 28 at 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
This position will support the one-time “Stories of Us” workshop, presented by a community arts organization called “The Department of Imaginary Affairs”. The program focuses on encouraging a group of up to 10 people who immigrated to Canada to write their stories. They use a variety of activities and prompts for participants to both tell and write their stories. These stories are then translated and professionally designed and used as learning materials for ESL classes across the country. Translation support is needed from Russian to English.  Volunteers must be able to provide simultaneous verbal translation and assist participants in transcribing their stories in English.
