Tribute Event

Wednesday, November 29, 2023 | 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Bernard Betel Centre | Cocktail Reception

Hunger and food insecurity is affecting vulnerable Jewish seniors more than ever.

From running out of food because of insufficient funds, to their inability to afford a balanced diet, to going hungry, missing meals, and in extreme cases, not eating for entire days because of lack of money. For these older adults, the record inflation and rising food costs continue to make their situations even worse.

For the past three years, the Bernard Betel Centre has been providing free culturally appropriate kosher Meals on Wheels to 620 seniors and Holocaust survivors, with a waitlist of 450 seniors. Each senior is receiving three free meals per week. 94% of these individuals live below the poverty line, and many often did not have enough food to eat. When asked about the last three months, these seniors shared that they were hungry at least one day a week because there was not enough money for food and many reported having to miss a meal to pay for rent and medication.

Seniors are going hungry. We desperately need your help to feed them.

Ticket price: $250 per person. Kashrut observed. To purchase tickets visit https://2023-Tribute-Event.eventbrite.ca or call 416-225-2112, ext. 0. Tax receipt provided on amount allowed by CRA.

Honouring Dr. Anna Shternshis, Director of the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies, Al and Malka Green Professor in Yiddish Studies; Fellow, John Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

All proceeds from the Tribute Event go towards supporting the Bernard Betel Centre Meals on Wheels program for the most vulnerable seniors in our community. While the need for Meals on Wheels is not new, the community has been unaware of these vulnerable seniors and the full magnitude and scope of the problem. These seniors face many barriers to accessing service and have limited, if any, supports in the community. They are isolated and feel forgotten. The Bernard Betel Centre’s Meals on Wheels is more than a meal. It serves as a “lifeline” to our vulnerable homebound seniors and Holocaust survivors living in poverty.
