Over the weekend, our community faced a painful incident at 6250 Bathurst, where mezuzahs were intentionally removed from the doors of Jewish seniors in an act of targeted antisemitism. For these residents, many of whom are Bernard Betel Centre Meals on Wheels recipients and take part in our programs and services, this was not only shocking, but deeply unsettling.
In the days that followed, the Bernard Betel Centre worked closely with UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and partner community agencies and leaders, to support the seniors affected. Yesterday, we visited the building to bring some Jewish joy by delivered festive, tasty sufganiyots to the residents. Thanks to the JRCC and Unapologetically Jewish, mezuzahs were reinstalled for those who wished to have them replaced and residents had space to share their feelings and experiences.
This coordinated response, rooted in compassion and connectedness, is a powerful reminder that our community stands strong in the face of hate. The seniors of 6250 were shown that they are surrounded by people who care deeply for their safety, dignity, and well-being.
We will continue working together to uplift, protect, and empower older adults in our community, today and always.
