Message from Gail Gould, Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends of the Bernard Betel Centre,

Shana Tova U’Metukah! The air becomes crisper and the days shorter as we enter the busy month of October. Since childhood, October has always been a time of renewal and reflection, with Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Thanksgiving reminding us of the importance of gratitude, connection, and community.

At the same time, this month marks the second year since the horrific events of October 7, 2023. That day remains one of the darkest in recent Jewish memory. We continue to pray for the safe return of the hostages still held in captivity and for peace and healing in Israel and across the Jewish world. Here in Toronto, we also continue to face unprecedented antisemitism, and as a Jewish organization, we remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of our members, volunteers, and staff.  Please join us as a Betel community on Monday, October 6 at 11:30 am, in the Betel Café for a short ceremony and candle lighting to commemorate those lost and prayers for the hostages still being held captive. You’ll be  invited to share your thoughts, feelings, and prayers on our memorial wall. This program is free for everyone and no registration is required.

Yet even in the face of fear and uncertainty, our community has shown extraordinary resilience. We have seen Jews in Israel and around the world come together with strength, solidarity, and a renewed sense of connection. This spirit of unity inspires us to move forward with hope—for peace, for healing, and for brighter days ahead.

May this season of renewal let us enjoy the wonderful recreational, health and wellness, and cultural programs at the Bernard Betel Centre and bring us all a year of health, joy, and meaningful connection. As we gather to celebrate our traditions and the blessings of community, let us hold close both our gratitude and our shared commitment to one another.

Wishing you and your families G’mar Chatimah Tova and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,
Gail Gould
Executive Director
