Summer Sunday Lunch and Lecture Series

The Bernard Betel Centre was awarded a $25,000 New Horizons for Seniors Program Grant for the Sunday Lunch and Lecture Series, a free monthly program offering lectures on topics such as arts, entertainment, culture, history, food and wellness, followed by a kosher lunch.

Sunday, July 7 – Everything about Klezmers 
Join Arnold Gilis as he speaks about everything Klezmer Music. Stick around after lunch to hear a concert featuring Klezmer music and Jewish songs. Speaker: Arnold Gilis, Educator

Sunday, July 28 – Art out of the Archives: From Yiddish Theatre to Kung Fu Films to Contemporary Art 
Join Evelyn Tauben as she shares an illustrated presentation on her exhibition showcasing the intersections between Chinese and Jewish histories in our city, exemplified by a historic building at Spadina and Dundas. This heritage building has transformed from a Yiddish theatre, to a kung fu movie house, and even had a stint as a burlesque house! Learn more about this quintessential Toronto story with many twists and turns.

Sunday, August 25 – Retirement Behind Bars 
After an abrupt end to a 30 year career at a high profile law firm teaching technology, Phyllis Taylor rose to achieve her ultimate professional pride. Join us to learn more about Phyllis’ current position delivering motivational workshops at our Ontario prisons. Learn about life in the prison system and how coaching and counselling marginalized people on their healing journey has been the biggest role of Phyllis’ life.

Sunday, September 15 – Memory and Aging: What’s Normal and What’s Not
Join us to learn about factors affecting your memory, including both health and lifestyle factors as well as strategies you can use to improve your memory!
Speaker: Dr. Nicole Anderson, Senior Scientists, Baycrest, Professor, University of Toronto

The presentation will be at 10:00 am and lunch will be served at 11:30 am. Admission is FREE. No registration required. Drop in.
